About The Official Election Results -
Single Transferable Voting (STV), or “Choice Voting,” assures that the majority will elect a majority of seats, but also that significant minority voices will also elect their fair share of seats in direct proportion to the level of support among the voters. With this voting method the votes are counted in rounds. Initially each vote counts exclusively for the candidates ranked number “1” on each ballot. Each vote can end up being divided into many fractional pieces that may end up helping to elect several candidates. In each round you will see the candidates listed in order based on how many votes each has in that round. If a candidate exceeds the winning threshold his or her total is reduced to the threshold and the necessary fraction of each vote in that candidate’s “pile” is transferred to the continuing candidate ranked next by each of those voters. At any point that there are no more surplus votes to transfer, candidates with the fewest votes are sequentially declared defeated, and votes in their “piles” are transferred to each of those voters’ next preference continuing candidate. This process continues round after round until all of the seats are filled. For more information about STV, or the “Choice Voting” method of proportional representation click here.

---------------------------------

The winning threshold, or “Droop Quota,” is the smallest number of votes that no more than the correct number of candidates can possibly receive. It is calculated by dividing the total number of valid ballots cast by the sum of one plus the number of seats to be filled, plus one [total number of valid ballots cast/(1 + the number of seats to be filled)] +1. in a simple example of one seat to be filled and 100 votes, the winning threshold is [100/(1+1)] + 1. One hundred divided by two equals 50. Add one more and the winning threshold is the familiar definition of a majority, or 51 out of 100. When 18 seats are up for election, with 5,000 votes (for example) the winning threshold would be [5,000/(18+1)]+1 or about 264 votes. 18 is the maximum number of candidates who can possibly get 264 votes each if there are 5,000 votes.

A “continuing candidate” is one who is still in the running and has not yet been declared elected, nor defeated.

unofficial results” - In order to provide eager candidates with some quick information about how they did in the election we attempted to use the “lite” (and uncertified) version of the Choice Plus software at some locations for unofficial results, with official results generated by a subsequent run through the certified software at the national level. Unfortunately, a small problem with that “lite” program caused incorrect results in the KPFT listener election (the 18th place winner and the 19th place loser were reversed). The official results on this web site have been verified and are certified.
