A PACIFICA FOUNDATION EDITORIAL AGAINST WAR
The drumbeats of war are once again being heard from the
nation’s capital. As the Bush Administration makes its
case for war against Iraq, the Pentagon maps out its military
options. While a few members of Congress, the only body that
has the Constitutional right to declare war, raise their voices
in opposition to Bush’s plans, most are either eerily
silent on this most pressing matter or lining up to support
all out war.
A new war against Iraq could lead to the death hundreds of
thousands of Iraqi children, women and men, compounding the
devastation that more than a decade of sanctions prohibiting
access to medicine and other essentials has already wrought.
A new war against Iraq could cost at least 100 billion dollars.
Our government already spends 5 million dollars each day for
military actions and economic warfare against the people of
Iraq.
Governments and non-governmental organizations around the
world have urged the Bush Administration to change its course,
to stop its planning for war. Throughout the United States,
each day more people express their opposition to this war.
We join this growing movement.
The Pacifica Foundation calls for a peaceful, negotiated
resolution of any conflicts between our country and Iraq.
We urge our government to work through the structures of international
law and to base foreign policy decisions on respect for the
sovereign rights of all nations.
Before it is too late, we call for action…action to
stop the drive toward war. Make your voice heard today! It
is time to flood our representatives with calls opposing this
war! Call the Congressional switchboard at 800-839-5276, that’s
800-839-5276. And call the White House comment line at 202-456-1111,
