Pacifica to Broadcast 40th Anniversary March on Washington

FREE SPEECH TV AND PACIFICA RADIO'S 'LIVE' BROADCAST

40th Anniversary of the March on Washington
Saturday August 23rd 2003

When a young Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963 and delivered his now famous "I Have A Dream Speech" that inspired people around the world, it was a voice already familiar to Pacifica listeners. Pacifica Radio has recorded the civil rights movement in this country virtually since its' inception. Rosa Parks discussing her refusal to give up her seat to a white man in 1962 is a part of Pacifica's WBAI Archives.

Saturday, August 23, 2003 the Southern Christian Leadership Conference will host the 40th Anniversary of the historic March On Washington and Pacifica Radio together with Free Speech TV will co-broadcast the event hosted by Pacifica Radio's Verna Avery-Brown and Ron Daniels of the Center For Constitutional Rights (unconfirmed). The event will bring together the Sit-In Generation with the Hip-Hop Generation and Free Speech TV and Pacifica Radio will broadcast the events "live" to over 14 million radio and cable television households nationwide.

Martin Luther King, III will lead a coalition of over 100 labor, peace, justice and human rights groups to a mass rally at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial this Saturday August 23, 2003 for the kick-off of a 15 month political action movement against increased U.S. militarism, class warfare and the so-called war on terrorism.

The 2-day events begin Friday evening with a prayer vigil and a Poetry Jam called "Spoken Word on Washington," carry over to Saturday morning with"community teach-ins"' at the site of the 1968 Ressurrection City and culminate in a 3pm mass rally at the Lincoln Memorial.
