BERKELEY (Nov. 14) – The five-station Pacifica Radio
network posted mixed results in its fall fundraising drives,
network officials announced today.
Pacifica stations KPFT 90.1FM in Houston and WPFW 89.3FM
in Washington, DC, posted strong results as did the network’s
flagship station 94.1FM in Berkeley, California. But KPFK
90.7FM in Los Angeles and WBAI 99.5FM in New York City were
off from last year’s results.
"While listener support is down from the period leading
up the U.S. war against Iraq, some of our stations have been
able to consolidate the gains made last year," said Pacifica
Executive Director Dan Coughlin.
Overall, the network raised some $3.4 million in on-air pledges
this fall, down five percent from $3.6 million in nationwide
pledges in fall 2002.
WPFW 89.3 FM raised $495,000 in pledges, up 28 percent from
last year’s figure of $385,000. KPFT 90.1 FM in Houston
raised a record $401,000 in on-air pledges, up 13 percent
from last year’s total. Listeners at Pacifica’s
largest station KPFA 94.1 FM in Berkeley pledged $971,000,
just off from last year’s record one million dollar
drive.
KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles posted $750,000 in pledges, down
nine percent from last year’s total of $820,000. WBAI
99.5 FM in New York posted $800,000 in pledges, down 20 percent
from last fall’s one million dollar fund-drive.
Don Rojas, the General Manager at WBAI, announced plans to
restructure the station in response to the drive numbers.
"In these challenging economic times for community radio
stations like WBAI, it is incumbent upon us to tighten our
belts, restructure our internal operations to produce more
efficiencies and improve the quality of our on-air programming,"
Rojas said.
Pacifica’s Chief Financial Officer, Lonnie Hicks,
said that the stations with the low drive numbers will be
re-budgeting and new budgets will be presented to the national
board for approval.
The network’s annual operating budget for the fiscal
year ending Sept. 31, 2003, is some $15.1 million.
