BERKELEY, CA (Feb. 3) – The Pacifica
Radio network announced today that KPFA
94.1 FM General Manager Gus Newport, the former Mayor of Berkeley
and a veteran community development specialist, is transitioning
from his position as General Manger of the Berkeley station
to return to non-profit consulting and writing.
“I’ve always been part of the Pacifica family
and I’ll look forward to continue to work with staff
and listeners around the network, especially in this critical
election year,” said Newport.
Pacifica Radio Executive Director Dan Coughlin announced
that Jim Bennett, the station’s operations director,
will step in as interim general manger on February 15, 2004.
A search for a new permanent General Manager will begin as
soon as the station’s newly elected Local Station Board
meets in mid-February, Coughlin said. The process could last
six to nine months.
Coughlin also said that Newport will be working as a consultant
with the Pacifica national leadership on network-wide election
year programming as well as on governance and organizational
development issues.
“We’re excited to have Gus move into his new
role especially in the context of Pacifica’s election
year programming initiatives,” said Coughlin, pointing
to a planned series of nationwide broadcasts on critical issues
facing the electorate.
Gus Newport was Mayor of the City of Berkeley between 1979-1986,
taking a leading role in the international fight against apartheid.
He subsequently led the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative,
a major redevelopment project in Boston and he taught at the
University of San Cruz, California, and Portland State University
