Pacifica Radio To Unveil New Audio
Internet Service - Open Source Radio Programming Gets Boost
While "Building a Global Community of Local Programming"
BERKELEY (July 1) - The Pacifica Radio network announced
today the launch of the
Pacifica AudioPort, a new Internet program distribution
system that will allow stations and independent producers
to share their programs with other Pacifica stations
and affiliates.
The Pacifica AudioPort
which will officially begin operating on July 5th, is aimed
at strengthening the circulation of digital media among independent
producers and non-commercial, community-based radio stations.
Located online at www.audioport.org,
the Pacifica AudioPort provides broadcasters with one easy-to-use
website for finding a wide variety of high-quality digital
audio programs generated by producers at Pacifica stations,
affiliate stations, and other independent producers, well
as programs also distributed by the Pacifica Foundation's
satellite.
By providing an alternate distribution source for programs
now only available by satellite, this service will allow more
stations to reliably obtain regular shows. As a repository
for program material produced by and for community radio stations,
the site will provide the opportunity for stations to access
material at a date and time convenient to their needs, and
to search for older shows relevant to current events.
AudioPort will also provide much needed workspace on the
internet for program producers in disparate locations to share
audio files and assemble programs that showcase the variety
of community radio journalists and activists across the globe.
Introducing the Pacifica AudioPort, Dan Coughlin, Executive
Director of the Pacifica Foundation said: "Pacifica AudioPort
is about building a global community of local programmers
in partnership, using new media technologies. We believe it
will strengthen independent radio and will provide a platform
to enable many more people to become involved in presenting
issues and information that affects communities nationwide."
The Pacifica AudioPort was built by Pacifica Radio's Internet
team in answer to the call from many sectors of the Pacifica
& Affiliates Network to expand affiliates' programming,
strengthen communication between radio stations, and provide
radio producers with new channels for distribution and collaboration.
There have been ongoing efforts throughout the Pacifica &
Affiliates Network to build partnership and multi-dimensional
broadcast systems. As well as being a program exchange service,
the Pacifica AudioPort provides an alternate distribution
system for programs that are currently distributed by the
Pacifica Satellite, allowing stations more options for obtaining
programs and making programs available to stations without
satellite access.
Pacifica currently distributes programming, such as the award-winning
morning news magazine "Democracy
Now!" hosted by Amy Goodman and the evening news
program "Free Speech Radio
News," to non-commercial radio stations nationwide.
Norman Stockwell, operations coordinator for WORT-FM
Community Radio (Madison Wisconsin) said, "Everyone
in community radio should be excited about this new method
to make the rich voices of our communities available. Pacifica
AudioPort will help give voice to people and movements that
are often unrepresented or underrepresented in other media."
Pacifica Radio, which was founded in 1949 by pacifist Lewis
Hill, now consists of a network of five radio stations, one
associate and 50 affiliated community stations across the
United States. Pacifica maintains an archive of 55 years of
radio broadcast history and has contributed to the national
dialogue on vital issues over the past half century.
The Pacifica AudioPort will follow the Pacifica mission to
contribute to lasting understanding between nations and individuals
of all races, cultures, creeds, colors, and preferences, and
to provide accurate, objective, comprehensive news on all
matters vitally affecting the community.
The broadcast service will be offered to all radio stations
affiliated with the Pacifica Foundation at no extra cost.
Radio producers not from affiliated stations will also be
able to upload their programs at no cost.
