Pacifica Radio Stations Break Into
Nation’s Top 30
BERKELEY (Aug. 9) -- Three Pacifica Radio stations jumped
into the rank of the country's largest Top
30 public radio stations this year, according to audience
estimates compiled by Arbitron.
Pacifica stations WPFW 89.3FM
in Washington ranked #27, WBAI
99.5FM in New York ranked #28, and KPFK
90.7FM in Los Angeles ranked #29 in the total number of
weekly listeners in the Winter 2004 metro survey period.
The rankings are based on a stations’ weekly cumulative
audience. They are compiled by the Radio Research Consortium,
Inc., an independent, not-for-profit research that provides
audience data to non-commercial radio stations.
WBAI in New York also ranked #27 according to the stations’
weekly metro AQH or Average Quarter Hour, which is the average
number of persons listening for at least five minutes during
a 15-minute period. WBAI is the highest rank of all Pacifica
stations in this category.
There are some 800 public radio stations in the country,
according to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
Pacifica's Arbitron audience estimates can fluctuate significantly
given the relatively small sample size. The overall trend
for the network remains positive. From the period fall 1998
to fall 2003, the network's total audience grew 34 percent.
The top five stations with the largest cumulative audience
were KQED San Francisco, WNYC-FM New York, WBEW/WBEZ Chicago,
KCRU/KCRW Los Angeles, and WBUR-AM/FM Boston.
