Pacifica Radio Consolidates Audience Diversity and Growth

 

BERKELEY, (Sept. 29) ­ The weekly audience of the five station Pacifica Radio network remained near record highs, according to Arbitron estimates released by Pacifica this week.

The total weekly audience listening to Pacifica in the network's five metro areas increased from 849,000 in winter 2004 to 931,000 in spring 2004, according to Arbitron estimates.

Pacifica continues to be a leader in serving diverse communities nationwide. Overall, Pacifica's estimated audience is 13 percent Hispanic and 21 percent Black in the spring 04 metro area survey, according to Arbitron estimates. Arbitron does not provide to Pacifica audience estimates for other ethnic or racial groups.

Meanwhile, a second report from a non-profit public radio research group shows Pacifica stations rising in the ranks of the nation's largest public radio stations.

Pacifica station WBAI 99.5 FM in New York jumped two spots from #27 in winter 04 to #25 in the spring 04 rankings of the nation's largest public radio stations, according to the Radio Research Consortium, Inc., an independent, not-for-profit research group that provides audience data to non-commercial radio stations.

And Pacifica station KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles climbed from #29 to #28, according to the Radio Research Consortium's ranking which are based on weekly metro Arbitron estimates.

"The spring 2004 numbers show the network is consolidating its recent gains and overall trend for the network remains positive," said Dan Coughlin, Executive Director of Pacifica Radio.

Between spring 2001 and spring 2004, Pacifica's total weekly audience in the five station metro survey areas grew from 795,000 to 931,000, according to Arbitron estimates. (The network does not have Arbitrons for the period fall 2001 to spring 2003.)

In the latest survey period, Pacifica station KPFA 94.1FM in Berkeley registered its highest ever Arbitron estimate, reaching 202,000 weekly listeners in the San Francisco metro area.

KPFK 90.7FM in Los Angeles and WBAI 94.1FM in New York City also led the network's gains in the winter-spring 2004 period. Arbitron estimates that each station's audience is at or near historic highs.

Weekly audience estimates for WBAI 99.5 FM increased from 206,000 to 243,000 between the winter and the spring. KPFK 90.7 FM audience estimates jumped from 193,000 to 206,000 in the same period.

Pacifica station KPFT 90.1 FM in Houston increased from 105,000 to 110,000 during the period. WPFW 89.3 FM in Washington, DC, dropped from a record audience high of 207,000 in winter 2004 to 180,000 in spring 2004.
