Pacifica Radio Posts Record Fall Fund Drives
BERKELEY (Nov. 29) – The five-station Pacifica Radio
network posted record fall fundraising drives this past month,
network officials announced today.
The non-commercial network raised some $3.9 million in on-air
pledges this fall, up 15 percent from $3.4 million last year
and higher than the record $3.6 million in listener support
registered in fall 2002.
“It’s a stirring vote of confidence in our five
stations and the community radio movement as a whole,”
said Dan Coughlin, the network’s Executive Director,
adding that listeners were rallying behind the independent
news and analysis provided by Pacifica during the U.S. election
season.
Pacifica stations KPFK 90.7FM
in Los Angeles and KPFA 94.1
FM in Berkeley led the way for the network this fall,
each posting one million dollar drives.
KPFK posted $1.03 million in on-air pledges, up from $750,000
last year. KPFA in Berkeley raised just over one million,
the equivalent of what the station raised over the last two
years.
WBAI 99.5 FM in New York
posted $930,000 in pledges, up 16 percent from last fall’s
$800,000 fund-drive.
WPFW 89.3 FM raised $534,000
in listener pledges, up from $495,000 in pledges last fall.
KPFT 90.1 FM in Houston
raised $365,000, off last year’s record fall drive of
$401,000.
The latest fund-drive results confirm the financial turnaround
at Pacifica Radio, the nation’s oldest listener-supported
network.
The three year period between 2001-2004 represent the best
financial results in the network’s history. Listener
support alone surged 58% percent during the period.
The network is projecting total revenue of $16.4 million
in the fiscal year ending Sept. 31, 2005.
Founded in 1949, Pacifica Radio's mission
is to engage in any activity that shall contribute to a lasting
understanding between nations and between the individuals
of all nations, races, creeds and colors.
The network is home to the daily one-hour morning news show
"Democracy Now!",
hosted by Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez, which airs on more
than 300 community radio and television stations nationwide.
