BERKELEY (Dec. 17) - Community radio veteran Ron Pinchback
has been named as the new General Manager of Pacifica Radio
station WPFW 89.3 FM in
Washington, DC, the Pacifica Radio network announced today.
The appointment of the Washington, DC-based broadcaster
concludes a six-month search process that involved a broad
array of WPFW staff, listeners, community groups, and local
and national board members.
"I'm thrilled to lead WPFW into a new era where we can
build upon our strengths in arts and cultural programming
while broadening our news and information capacity,"
said Ron Pinchback, referring to the stations jazz and old
school musical traditions as well as its reputation for broadcasting
hard-hitting news and public affairs programs.
Ron Pinchback has served as interim General Manager of the
27-year-old station for the last 18 months. During his tenure,
the station posted record fund-drives and its highest audience,
breaking into the Top 30 public radio stations in the country.
"With Ron's track record of proven achievement,
I'm sure WPFW's best days are yet to come," said
Pacifica Radio Executive Director Dan Coughlin.
Ron Pinchback began his career at WPFW as a producer of
WPFW's jazz, public affairs and arts calendars.
He later became a WPFW jazz programmer and was elected to
serve as volunteer representative to the Local Advisory Board.
"I graduated from Ballou Sr. High and grew up in southeast
Washington. For me, the message and chance to make a difference
is the greatest reward," he said.
"I chose to volunteer because of the level of community
involvement by the station and the courage it displays in
addressing issues vital to the people," he said. "I
will continue, protect and strengthen those mandates as General
Manager."
The WPFW GM search process highlighted Pacifica's renewed
commitment to democratic participation and transparency.
Some eighty candidates were reviewed by WPFW's Local Station
Board and five presented to Pacifica Executive Director for
selection.
