International Women's Day

2007-03-08

WBAI's Deepa Fernandes and KPFT's Renee Feltz host Pacifica's 2007 International Women's Day Special. Producers from all five sister stations and our many affiliates bring you women's voices from around the world. Tune in for independent news, inspiring interviews, some hestory and some spoken word. The two-hour special will be available in 1-hour segments on www.pacifica.org.

We bring you these voices in the spirit of the women of the Popular Assembly of Oaxaca, known as APPO in spanish. On August 1, 2006 thousands of women affiliated with APPO took over nine state run television and radio stations and broadcast independently produced programming.

Featured segments include: The history of International Women's Day, the story of the first feminist in the Americas, women combatting normalized violence in India, female political prisoners in Argentina testifying against their torturers in human rights trials, Pacifica Radio Archive recordings of women we've lost, women fighting abuse in the military, women struggling amid Hurricane Katrina's aftermath, a testimonial from an Iraq woman read by her Palastinian sister, and poetry and spoken word.
