This week's Sprouts examines some of the lesser known history of slavery in the United States. First, host Francesca Rheannon speaks about slavery in the North with the authors of "Complicity: How the North Promoted, Prolonged, and Profited from Slavery." Then we learn about the Gullah gardens of South Carolina from Patricia Klindienst, author of "The Earth Knows My Name: Food, Culture, and Sustainability in the Gardens of Ethnic America." And finally, we hear a poem celebrating the West Indian ancestors from poet Lynn Thompson.

This edition of Sprouts is produced by Francesca Rheannon, producer and co-host of "Writer's Voice" on WXOJ-LP in Florence, Massachusetts. Featuring "Glad I'm Here" by Bessie Jones, Gullah musician.
