Telesur - A New International News Network
is born
On
Sunday July 24, 2005, an historic new moment for the America's
as a collaboration of South American countries & Cuba
will launched a new TV network called TELESUR. Meant as a
counterweight to privately-run networks in South America like
CNN, Univision and even the BBC, this new network aims to
be a 'people's network'.
It is also intended as a spur toward South American integration.
The network is to be jointly owned and funded by many countries:
at first, Venezuela (51%), Argentina (20%), Cuba (19%), and
Uruguay (10%), with other countries joining later. TELESUR
already has representation in Columbia, Bolivia, Brazil, and
Venezuela and plans to open offices in Argentina, Cuba, Washington,
and Mexico.
On Sunday, July 24, the official launch date, Pacifica Radio
was covering the historic event from Caracas. This new media
network is even more momentous due to a last minute move by
the US House of Representatives which passed an amendment
Wednesday allowing the U.S. government to counter the TELESUR
broadcast with "clear and objective information".
The Venezuelan government has said that if the White House
goes ahead with a plan to jam all signals of TELESUR with
Radio Marti-like propaganda, it would set off "an electronic
war" between the US and South American nations.
