8:07-8:15 Sen. Clinton & Rep. Nadler Call For Investigation on White House & EPA Lies Over Health Impact Of 9/11

Intro: Newsday today reveals that EPA animal tests concluded that the World Trade Center debris dust caused lung disease in test animals and that the EPA didn't begin testing debris dust until 10 days after Sept. 11

U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Rep. Jerrold Nadler have called for a Congressional investigation over reports that the Environmental Protection Agency and White House mislead the public over the health hazards of the collapse of the World Trade Center.

Clinton said, "I know a little bit about how White Houses work. I know somebody picked up a phone, somebody got on a computer, somebody sent an e-mail, somebody called for a meeting, somebody in that White House probably under instructions from somebody further up the chain told the E.P.A.: `Don't tell the people of New York the truth.' And I want to know who that is."

Meanwhile Newsday revealed today that the government did not begin testing debris dust near the World Trade Center until 10 days after the Sept. 11 attacks.

And Newsday reports that EPA scientists later concluded but never told the public that the dust caused lung disease in test animals.

The EPA began reassuring the public weeks before it had any test results on the air quality.

8:15-8:35 Howard Dean Takes Major Lead in NH Poll Over Kerry: A Debate on Dean's Candidacy Between Rep. Jerrold Nadler & Norman Solomon

Intro: As Dean's candidacy takes off, a debate is growing on who the real Howard Dean: the progressive savior of the Democratic left or a Clinton-like Democrat.

It has been another one of those weeks for former Vermont Governor Howard Dean that would have been nearly unimaginable six months ago.

He has appeared on the cover of New York Times and USA Today. Thousands of supporters attended major Dean rallies in New York, San Antonio and Seattle. His campaign officials say Dean will rake in near $10 million in campaign donations for the third quarter a near record for a Democratic candidate.

And now the results of a new Zogby poll show Dean has taken a commanding leading in the New Hampshire primary.

Of a poll of 500 likely Democratic voters, 38 percent support Dean. Coming in second is Massachusetts Senator John Kerry who is at 17 percent.

Six months ago Kerry was beating Dean by a 26 to 13 percent margin.

But Dean's rise from an obscure candidate from one of the nation's smallest states to Democratic frontrunner, has not come without some controversy over Dean's policies ranging from health care to gun control to Israel.

Today we'll have a discussion with Congressman Jerrold Nadler and Norman Solomon, executive director of the Institute for Public Accuracy.

8:45-8:58 The Forgotton Ones: A Look at the Life & Work of Photographer Milton Rogovin

Half a century ago, one year after a vicious attack by the House of Un-American Activities Committee had devastated his optometry practice and silenced his voice, Milton Rogovin picked up a camera for the first time. He was 48 years old. "My voice was essentially silenced," says Rogovin," So I decided to speak out through photograghs."

Miton Rogovin (born in 1909) is one of the nation's most accomplished social documentary photographers, although until now he has remained virtually unknown outside of his hometown of Buffalo, New York.

He began shooting photographs of storefront African American churches with the help his wife, Anne Rogovin. He continued to shoot working people in Buffalo and around the world with his wife's financial support. In 1972, he shot his most significant work ,just a few blocks away from his optometric office. They consisted of portraits of the Lower West Side, one of Buffalo's poorest communities.

At the age of 83, after overcoming heart surgery and prostate cancer he continued to shoot the streets of the Lower West Side. In 1997, Rogovin developed cataracts in both eyes. In 1999, he restored his eyesight through surgery and continued to take pictures. These photos , developed in his 90s, are the feature of a current exhibit at the New York Historical Society.

I went with him and producer Vilka Tzouras to the New York Historical Society to the opening of the exhibition "Milton Rogovin: the Forgotten Ones." This exhibit is on display until Sept 14, 2003.
