20 Massacred in Port-au-Prince Soccer Stadium, Jailed
Jean-Juste Mulls Presidential Run
As reports emerge of a massacre of at least 20 civilians
at a Soccer Stadium in Port-au-Prince, we go to Haiti for
the latest as well as get an update on the condition of jailed
Haitian priest, Father Gerard Jean-Juste who is mulling a
run for president.
The U.N. mission in Haiti recently launched an inquiry into
the massacre of at least 20 people last weekend in the Port-au-Prince
slum of Martissant.
During a soccer game on Saturday funded by the U.S. Agency
for International Development and the US-backed interim Haitian
government, hooded police and men with machetes attacked people
they called "bandits." This according to Reuters.
Meanwhile, Haitian priest Father Gerard Jean-Juste remains
in prison and is still suffering from injuries inflicted during
his arrest in July. Father Jean-Juste is now considered the
prime candidate to run for president on the Lavalas ticket.
He told the Associated Press earlier this week that he may
run if his candidacy is approved by ousted Haitian president
Jean-Bertrand Aristide who was overthrown in what he calls
a modern day kidnapping in the service of a coup d'etat backed
by the United States.
Grieving Military Mothers Rally Around Cindy Sheehan
at Camp Casey
We play a press conference from Camp Casey held by members
of Gold Star Families for Peace with mothers and wives from
around the country speaking about their opposition to the
war and to President Bush's policies in Iraq. [includes rush

We now turn to Camp Casey, the anti-war protest site where
hundreds have camped out for more than two weeks next to President
Bush's Ranch in Crawford Texas. Mothers, wives and other family
members gathered there after Cindy Sheehan, the mother of
Casey, a solider killed in Iraq last year, began camping near
the ranch earlier this month and vowed to stay until Bush
met with her.
Cindy left the Camp late last week to go to Los Angeles and
care for her ailing mother. She returned on Wednesday and
held a press conference on Thursday morning with other members
of Gold Star Families for Peace. The conference began with
mothers and wives from around the country speaking about their
opposition to the war and to Bush”s policies in Iraq.
They also asked to meet with Bush and demanded that the troops
be brought home.
Cindy also vowed she would lead a national bus tour beginning
September 1 and ending September 24 in Washington D.C . That
is the day that United for Peace and Justice and other anti-war
groups are organizing a rally and march in D.C. Mark Anderson
of the organization Eyes Wide Open also spoke at the press
conference. Eyes Wide Open organized an exhibition on the
human costs of the Iraq war that features a pair of boots
honoring each U.S. military casualty. The group had been traveling
with Casey's boots for the week.

50 Years After the Murder of Emmett Till, the Investigation
Continues
This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of Emmett Till.
He was beaten and shot near Money, Mississippi after he allegedly
whistled at a white female store clerk. We speak with filmmaker
Keith Beauchamp who produced "The Untold Story of Emmett
Louis Till" and University of Missouri-Columbia professor
Clenora Hudson-Weems. [includes rush
transcript - partial]
On August 28th, 1955, fifty years ago this Sunday, Emmett
Till was abducted, beaten and shot near Money, Mississippi
after he allegedly whistled at a white female store clerk.
The clerk's husband, Roy Bryant, and his half-brother, J.W.
Milam, were tried and acquitted by an all-white jury. The
two later confessed to beating and shooting Till in a magazine
article. Both men have since died.
On June 1st of this year, 50 years after Emmett Till's mutilated
body was found in a Mississippi river, federal investigators
unearthed the teen's casket in search of clues in a murder
case that helped kindle the civil rights movement. Mississippi
prosecutors and the FBI have said DNA or other evidence might
help determine who killed the 14 year-old and whether anyone
still alive should be prosecuted.
The U.S. Justice Department announced last year it would
reopen an investigation into Emmett Till's slaying. They said
the move was triggered by several pieces of information including
a documentary by filmmaker Keith Beauchamp.

Bob Dylan Performing "The Ballad of the Emmett
Till" on Pacifica Radio's WBAI in 1962
In May 1962 the legendary folksinger Bob Dylan came by the
WBAI studios
in New York to perform his rarely heard tribute to Emmett
Till. This is one of the earliest known live recordings of
Bob Dylan.
It was recorded within days of his 21st birthday. "The
Ballad of Emmett Till" never appeared on an official
Bob Dylan record and was only released on a compilation put
out by Broadside Records (on which Dylan recorded under the
pseudonym Blind Boy Grunt). This is from the Pacifica
Radio Archives.
