Protests were held around the world yesterday in response
to Israel's assault on Lebanon and Palestine. From San Francisco
to Cairo, Montreal to Rome, tens of thousands took to the
streets to call for an end to Israeli aggression in the Middle
East.
On Tuesday, hundreds gathered across the street from the
Israeli Mission in New York City. Protesters demanded an end
to U.S support of Israel's attacks and freedom for all Palestinian
prisoners. Some of the speakers directly criticized New York
Senator Hillary Clinton for her remarks at a rally on Monday
in support of Israel.
- Sen. Hillary Clinton (D - NY), speaking on July 17, 2006.
- Jane Toby, protester speaking on July 18, 2006.
- Maymanah Farhat, protester speaking on July 18, 2006.
Another large protest took place on Tuesday in Dearborn Michigan
-- the city home to the largest number of Arab-Americans in
the United States. Nearly 10,000 people marched through the
center of the city to demand that the United States pressure
Israel to halt attacks in Lebanon and Gaza. One of the organizers
of yesterday's protest joins us today from Michigan - Osama
Siblani is the publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the Dearborn-based
weekly bilingual newspaper, "The Arab American."
One Bright Shining Moment: The Forgotten Summer of
George McGovern
Former Senator George McGovern turns 84 years-old today.
Ridiculed by the press and scorned by his colleagues, the
1972 presidential candidate stood alone on the senate floor
calling for an end to the Vietnam War. We play an excerpt
of the documentary, "One Bright Shining Moment: The Forgotten
Summer of George McGovern." [includes rush
transcript]
Today is the birthday of former South Dakota senator George
McGovern. He turns eighty-four. He was the first senator to
go to the Senate floor and demand an immediate end to the
Vietnam War.
These were tumultuous times. Martin Luther King had been
assassinated. Robert Kennedy - who had also run for president
- had been assassinated. In 1972, McGovern ran for president
on an antiwar platform...ending the Vietnam War.
This is an excerpt of a documentary about his life called
"One Bright Shining Moment: The Forgotten Summer of George
McGovern" produced by Stephen Vittoria. It features Howard
Zinn, Vietnam vet Ron Kovic, Gore Vidal, Gloria Steinem, Dick
Gregory, baseball player Jim Bowton and, of course, George
McGovern himself.
- "One Bright Shining Moment: The Forgotten Summer
of George McGovern" - excerpt of documentary.
