Dennis Bernstein: introduction: Bush surprise speech calls
for a Palestinian state.. Israeli colonizers kill 6 more in
Jenin.. dozens arrested at a protest in San Francisco today
for blocking the entrance to the Pacific Stock Exchange including
a former head of the Exchange.. Michael Franti of Spearhead
in studio..
8:01:00 PM PST
Dennis: now w Ali Abunimah, founder of Electronic Intifada..
about Bush's suprise speech today, *A New Roadmap for Palestine*..
Ali: congratulating the Palestinians for appointing a most
corrupt man as Prime Minister.. he built a 1.5 million dollar
villa in Gaza, funded by unknown sources.. as for the rest
of Bush's statement, a cynical and meaningless exercise..
no obligations on Israel, impossible demands on the Palestinians,
an attempt to rally support for an Israeli led, US war on
Iraq (link2).. we are witnessed the most incompetent US administration
in memory.. Dennis: out of the blue for sure.. a quick speech,
Powell beside him.. Ali: this is so transparent, it is ridiculous,
no Arabs are fooled.. offers nothing to the Palestinians..
what? one corrupt and meaningless *leader* appoints another
corrupt and meaningless *leader*.. I can't believe the US
adminstration is so stupid, so out of touch with reality..
Dennis: 12 Palestinians killed on the West Bank.. Israel even
kills two of its own guards in a murderous frenzy.. Ali: Israeli
death squads kill 12 in one night, 23 in a week, including
4 children.. people in Syria and Lebanon watching all this..
just because the media does such a good job hiding it from
us here, doesn't mean the folks on the ground in the Middle
East are fooled one bit.. protest to the Israeli embassy in
DC
8:07:00 PM PST
Dennis: ambulance and ambulance workers attacked.. now w Tobias,
in Jenin, a member of the International Solidarity Movement..
Tobias: the last 24 hours horrible here.. started in a village..
special forces killing one and injuring five.. operations
continued today, a big explosion early this morning in Jenin..
injured people, after 35 minutes delay, one ambulance.. then
four people dead in a house.. no fighting, these people were
sleeping, one shot down by an Apache homicide helicopter..
the other people executed in their sleep.. one was a 17 year
old ambulance worker for the Palestinian Red Crescent (Red
Cross).. I met many children today crying, they all say they
loved him.. he was executed while sleeping inside the building
by Israeli special forces.. about another ambulance worker
shot from behind in the heart.. Dennis: Palestinian ambulance
worker one of the most dangerous professions in the world..
Tobias: about another group of ambulance workers attacked..
the feeling today in the camp is sadness, I see many many
people crying.. the internal curfew in Jenin has been lifted
for over a month, but under closure, no movement in or out..
a lot of suffering among the young kids.. the effect on children
is horrible to see.. catatonic.. other many serious psychological
effects.. many children have stopped talking.. about Bush's
speech today?, no one here thinking about Bush.. too sad..
8:14:49 PM PST
Dennis: now w Barbara Lubin of the Middle East Childrens Alliance
in studio.. will be at the protest tomorrow in SF.. about
Tobias.. I've been pretty sad myself the last few days too,
a brother of one of my Dehaisha house guests, Akmed, taken
away by the Israelis, not charged, being held under administrative
detention for six months, renewable, not charged, not able
to defend themselves.. I see the sadness in Akmed's eyes..
all three of the kids living with me, trying to have a great
time going to SF State, but every minute of the night they
are trying to find out about their families.. Dennis: when,
if, the US attacks Iraq, Ariel Sharon has been given the go
ahead by Bush to do what he wants to to the Palestinians..
Barbara: the only safety for Israel is to treat the Palestinians
with justice.. TOMORROW, 11AM CIVIC CENTER, MARCH TO JEFFERSON
PARK.. PUT ON OUR RAIN SLICKERS, CARRY AN UMBRELLA, OR JUST
GET WET.. WHATEVER WE EXPERIENCE TOMORROW AS A RESULT OF THE
WEATHER IS NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT THE IRAQIS ARE FACING,
WHAT THEY HAVE FACED.. the most important thing we can show
is a solid wall of opposition.. every single Democrat congratulated
Ariel Sharon for winning the election, and voted to send him
more money.. Dennis: about the 23,000 pound bomb.. Barbara:
I remember a month after the Gulf War I visited Iraq.. total
destruction.. 200,000 civilians died during that war.. Tomorrow,
11AM meet at the Civic Center, march to Jefferson Park.. Cynthia
McKinney will speak, Barbara Lubin, Martin Sheen, more.. THIS
MAY BE YOUR LAST OPPORTUNITY TO HEAD OFF THIS WAR..
8:22:35 PM PST
Dennis: hundreds of people blocked the entrance to the Pacific
Stock Exchange this morning.. now w Warren Langley, a retired
US Lt Colonel, and former president of the Pacific Stock Exchange..
Dennis: Welcome.. an unusual homecoming?.. Col. Langley: I
was a little nervous, never been arrested before.. Dennis:
why? Col. Langley: because people around the world arrested
and Bush isn't hearing.. we need to turn the volume up and
this seemed appropriate to me.. Col. Langley: I am very supportive
of the military.. I was in 15 years.. but today they are geing
asked to carry out political goals I don't agree with.. I
oppose the policy, not the individuals risking their lives..
I consider myself very patriotic and lucky to have been born
here.. this morning I showed up and we met as a group.. one
woman had been in Iraq, had large pictures of human faces
in Iraq.. we joined hands and walked to the entrance of the
Stock Exchange, blocked the entrance.. I had a suit and tie
on.. I felt comfortable with who I was with.. we sat down,
the police came around.. then they arrested me.. how it felt
to have cuffs put on.. about the people trying to get in to
work.. Col. Langley: we apologized for the inconvenience,
but this is important, a small price to pay.. I'm at a point
in my life, 60 years old, I am comfortable with who I am..
8:30:22 PM PST
Dennis: Michael Franti and Spearhead will performing tonight
and tomorrow night in SF, at an event called 'Cleansing'..
Dennis: thank you for your music.. Michael: I never write
the same way twice.. sometimes the beat starts first, sometimes
the rhyme.. creative energy all comes from the same source,
the one great spirit of creativity.. what we are seeing today
all the voices around the world.. 6 billion of us on the planet,
and a few hunderd *leaders*.. the spiritual and emotional
have had to take a back seat to the corporate and the monetary
interests.. people standing up.. politics is pervasive throughout
society.. family farms be came agribusiness.. about Island
Records, bought out again and again, not looking of the next
Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, looking instead for the next InSinc,
the next Brittany Spears.. we try to make music that is uplifting,
to give us energy to love our kids.. we feel so oppressed
by all the things happening to us.. I listen to your show
everyday.. you have to take care of yourself, take care of
your kids.. that's why we are doing this healing arts things
tomorrow.. touch is the humanizer.. I started going barefoot
three years ago, started when I was traveling where people
don't have money for shoes.. I feel now a greater connection
with the earth.. my feet heal faster.. about all the nerve
endings on the bottom of your feet.. at the Avalon Ballroom,
SF.. concert at 7PM.. the cost for massage, yoga, music all
together.. when I practice yoga it helps me develop compassion
for myself and others.. helps me understand my position as
an artist.. I'd love for a kid to come up to me someday and
tell me 'the first time I meditated was at your show'.. thanks
Dennis, shine on..
8:43:14 PM PST
Dennis: about the corporate control of the media.. now w Peter
Philips the director of Project Censored.. we're down to about
ten corporations that dominate the US media.. 24 hour TV news..
AOL Time Warner.. CNN.. huge.. interactive with government
and corporations.. Fisk wrote about script writers in Atlanta
who can now insist on changes in reporters' stories.. rewriting
stories to fit new parameters.. in bed with the military..
how media is structuring itself.. 75% of all so-called 'experts'
on national news show are white Republicans.. WHY IS MEDIA
SO COMPLIANT?.. corporate media dependent on news.. but they've
downsized their news rooms, no reporters anymore, but now
*news collectors*, cozy with politicians and corporate heads..
about the Homeland Security Act.. stepping in with a plan
to centralize information technology.. about the internet..
freeflow now.. but they are talking about putting in 'gatekeepers'..
giving the government control to block independent media..
total information control.. shut up and go shopping.. total
information control.. shut up and go shopping.. total information
control.. shut up and go shopping.. total information control..
shut up and go shopping.. total information control.. shut
up and go shopping.. total information control.. shut up and
go shopping.. total information control.. Dennis: Peter: Dennis:
Peter: not just Dan Rather not asking questions after 911..
in Russia Tass, everything came out of one party.. the infrastructure
building today undermining freedom of the press.. we know
journalists are self censoring.. they know certain stories
*won't fit*.. Project Censored has no problem picking out
stories every year that the corporate newz won't cover.. Indymedia
and Pacifica leaping to fill the void, but the new infrastructure
being developed could stop it.. other good sources: Christian
Science Monitor, Mother Jones, The Nation.. NorthBayProgressive.org..
in Cairo, a website.. grassroots news from people who saw
it happen.. GET YOUR NEWS FROM LOCAL GRASSROOTS SOURCES, MEMEOGRAPH
INFORMATION FROM THE INTERNET AND DISTRIBUTE IT.. two events:

at Sonoma State Cooperage facility.. and Saturday March 29
