Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert: more disasters
for George Bush.. a dozen Iraqis killed by a US missile in
a marketplace in Baghdad (Fisk photos) (Reuters photos)..
US General blames the civilians.. in Tampa, George Bush says
US protecting innocent civilians is a central tenet of US
action.. 'far removed from reality'.. as many as 307 Iraqi
civilians have died.. Pentagon says.. giant sandstorm furthers
delays Coalition advance into Baghdad.. Iraqi resistance..
British 7th armored brigade stopped by irregulars outside
Basra.. UN meeting.. in southern Colombia three more CIA officers
killed in a plane crash.. in NYC protestors stop traffic..
8:06:08 PM PST
Dennis: the Iraqi civilian death toll shot up today.. Baghdad
marketplace bombed (Robert Fisk: 'It was an outrage, an obscenity')
(UK Ind).. now w Dr. April Hurley in Baghdad.. about the market,
in a poor district.. small shops selling odds and ends.. I
know of five people killed, one child, one woman, three men..
(BBC report).. 12 were injured.. a car hit.. several bombs
in the area, one near a school.. about the dead and injured..
another group desribed driving from Syria to Baghdad on a
bus.. the bus attacked by an Apache homicide helicopter, 3
missiles fired.. two missed, the third hit and killed five..
about the marketplace, three explosions close together, probably
not a missile..
8:13:10 PM PST
Dennis: about two women educated in the US, now in Baghdad,
very upset at the US bombing.. now w Suad Al Radi and Amar
El Hadede.. Suad: I live in north Baghdad.. if you have children
how do you feel? sympathy for the people trying to kill you?..
what harm did we do to the US?.. Iraq cannot swallow its oil,
it has to sell it.. did we send you a message, please come
liberate us?.. our country is an ancient country.. if you
dig anywhere in Iraq, you find oil, water, or ancient sites..
we have been civilized for 10,000 years.. we had the first
set of laws in the world.. now w Amar: about the bomb that
hit her house.. about the damage to her house.. (this lady
is quite upset with the US).. about the effects of the war
on children.. rockets over their heads.. can you imagine what
happens to your children, rockets flying over their heads..
women are educated here, women are fighting with the men..
your president saying lies.. the other day a farmer woman
shoot down a US helicopter with and old German gun.. about
the pictures of your prisoners on TV.. you have to see your
prisoners, you are not God.. your president says you come
to liberate.. I am in my sixties, Suwad is 85 years old..
we live all our lives, we don't care what happens to us, but
we care for our children and grandchildren, we care for humanity..
I am ashamed for myself to live in an age to see such leaders
(as Bush) and so many people applauding him.. Suad: I wanted
you to hear her part of the story, many people like her..
you can walk anywhere in Baghdad, nobody molest you.. not
like the US.. the Iraqs known all over the world as hospitable
and tolerant..
8:44:20 PM PST
Dennis: Flashpoints poet on assignment, Aurora Levins Morales
has been combing the internet for human stories about the
war.. Aurora: reads a poem about the women who crowded Iraqi
hospitals in the days just before the war started to have
their babies before the bombing started, and all the children
born those days..
8:48:00 PM PST
Leslie Kean: about Dennis Kucinich, peace activist and US
Congressman from Ohio.. now w Dennis Kucinich: it is heartbreaking
to see our men and women cast into a battle they didn't want
to be in.. heartbreaking to see Iraqi civilian casualties..
heartbreaking to be in a moment to see the US conducting a
war of aggression.. what can we do to stop this? I reduced
a bill to repeal the war authorization in October.. we persuing
a war based on a number of falsehoods.. Congress needs to
pull the plug on the financing.. and we need to reconfirm
the importance of the UN.. we have lost the initiative on
terrorism.. this preemptive war has cost the US internationally..
I believe very strongly in non-violent action, this country
has become strong because of it.. two different views of US..
unilateral and multilateral.. we are getting in deeper everyday..
people have to stand up for their country, with resolution,
with compassion for those with different views, until our
troops come home.. Leslie: do you believe we could indicted
for war crimes?.. Dennis: war is a crime.. we need to get
our troops home, and not lock people in to a corner.. national
health care is included in peace.. we are hoping that those
responsible for this war, will change their minds.. a hundred
million people perished in wars in the twentieth century,
most of them innocent.. so much we can do at this dawn of
a new century.. but we're moving the wrong direction, in spite
of millions of peace loving people around the world.. we must
believe in our capacity to change the outcome, and not be
discouraged by the march to war by our government.. EVENT:
