Dennis Bernstein: "The Complete Works of the Mujahadeen:
Charlie Wilson's War" (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2003,
$26.00). Guest on the phone is George Crile, author, and producer
of CBS's "60 Minutes", who discusses the evolution
of the Mujahadeen from their origins during the Reagan administration
, including their early training and development with CIA
cooperation and the constant support of Texas Congressman
Charlie Wilson. By the latter years of the 1980's, the CIA
was not just providing arms to a half million Afghans, it
had taken 150,000 of them and transformed them in to force
of "techno holy warriors." Pipe bombs, bicycle bombs,
car bombs, camel bombs; all combined to devastate the Soviet
Army's resolve to carry the war to victory. It is estimated
that the Soviets lost 50,000 troops. After the Soviets withdrew
the US and Saudi Arabia continued to fund and subsidize the
rebels giving 200 million dollars as late as 1992. With pressure
on the Berlin Wall in the West, plus this war on the Southern
Front, the Soviet Union ceased to exist and sadly the arms
and the warriors remain to this day.

Dennis: from KPFT in Houston...Cultural Baggage with Dean
Baker. Dean from KPFT in Houston, TX, discussing the Tulia
prisoner release in Texas. 38 people were arrested on phony
charges and jailed for nearly 4 years. All were innocent but
were falsely convicted by Texas narcotics prosecutor Tom Coleman
who used false, misleading, and non-existent "evidence"
which was found to be without credibility. A wonderful new
summer for 38 people in Tilia, Texas as they return to their
