The Knight Report with Robert Knight
Islamic nationalism re-emerges in Iraq. Nearly a half million
Iraqi Muslims marched this weekend from Baghdad to Najaf for
the burial of assassinated Ayatollah Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim,
the former Iranian based Shiite leader in exile. Comments
by Dr. Peter Gowan, editor of the New Left Review.

Dennis Bernstein talks with hate crime victims Dr. Ayad and
Leila Jindeel and neighbors.
We return to the case of Dr. Ayad and Leila Jindeel. The
Jindeels fled Iraq in 1993 after the first gulf war and moved
into a neighborhood of San Jose where they hoped to live in
peace and quiet, after years of violence and uncertainty in
Iraq. Unfortunately for the couple, the violence and the uncertainty
continued. For more than three years the Jindeels were harassed
by their next door neighbor Ed Crutchfield. According to police
records and eyewitness testimony from the Jindeels and other
neighbors, Crutchfield carried out a series of violent actions
including verbal harassment, outspoken racial slurs and brandishing
of guns. While Crutchfield was ultimately prosecuted and convicted
of disturbing the peace, he was never prosecuted for the more
serious hate crimes. The Jindeels and their neighbors are
now frustrated and frightened that Crutchfield will be released
from jail and take further violent action against them.

Dennis Bernstein talks with Vicki Saporta, President of the
National Abortion Federation in Washington DC.
These days pro-choice doctors risk their lives trying to
offer safe, timely abortions to those women in need of such
medical support. On at least ten occasions anti-abortion terrorists
have attempted to assassinate doctors, their families and
clinic personnel. On several occasions they have succeeded.
In a 1993 interview with Phil Donahue, anti-abortion activist
Paul Hill justified killing pro-choice doctors and equated
such killing to killing Hitler. Less than a year after that
interview, Hill assassinated Dr. John Britton on the grounds
of the (then) Ladies Center Women's Health Clinic as he arrived
to work. Also killed on the spot was his escort, seventy-four
year old James Barrett. Dr. Britton's wife was also wounded
that morning, but survived. Britton's killer Paul Hill is
scheduled to be executed tomorrow in Florida. Hill's supporters
have barraged local officials with threats. Joining to talk
with Dennis about the upsurge in violence facing pro-choice
workers in response to Hill's planned execution, is Vicki
Saporta. She is the President of the National Abortion Federation,
a Washington DC based professional association of abortion
clinics and providers.
