Story: Senator Byrd
leads opposition
In what proved to be a futile attempt to slow the administration’s
rush towards war, US Senator Robert
Byrd of West Virginia debated strenuously on the floor
of the senate last night hoping to persuade his democractic
colleagues to oppose the resolution. His argument focused
on the constitutionality of the resolution.

Story: With the Democrats holding a majority in the Senate,
there remained a possibility, albeit remote, that the Senate
could have defeated the Iraq war resolution. But 29 Democrats
voted in favor of war. Hillary Rodham Clinton was among them.

Senator Joseph Biden
of Delaware argued that the resolution actually lessens the
change of war.
