Story: BUSH APPLAUDS U.N. RESOLUTION
The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved a tough new
Iraq resolution Friday aimed at forcing Saddam Hussein to
disarm or face “serious consequences” that would
almost certainly mean war.

she’s been following today’s developments.

Story: REPORT FROM BAGHDAD
President Bush says it’s time for all patriotic Iraqis
to embrace this resolution as an opportunity to escape war,
and he reiterated that any Iraqi non-compliance would reap
serious consequences. The resolution was just passed today
by the Security Council, yet the Bush administration has been
preparing for weeks to launch an attack against Saddam Hussein.
50,000 U.S. troops are amassing in the region, and three U.S.
cargo ships carrying tanks have left the U.S. shores, according
to Reuters News agency.

Story: SPOKEN WORD PROFESSORS
This drumbeat to war has triggered political responses from
the creators of art and poetry among the peacemakers of the
world. Professor Obedeke Kamau is co-host of Pacifica radio
station KPFT's Critical and Progressive Review, or CPR, in
Houston, Texas. Dr. Kamau is a political scientist, but he
also expresses himself through the genre of spoken word. During
an interview with KPFT programmer Akua Holt, he states his
views on war and peace.

Story: IRAQIS IN INDIA MAY RETURN TO FIGHT WAR
The holy month of Raamadan began yesterday, and Iraq is
preparing for a US-led attack. Meanwhile, countries around
the world are preparing for a certain economic fallout. In
India, trade with Iraq amounted to over a billion dollars
this year, and it’s not only the Iraqi community in
India is concerned about the potential war on Iraq. Politicians
and the media are also raising serious questions.

Story: Professor Edmund Ghareeb talks about Iraq
without Saddam Hussein
In his speech announcing the UN resolution this morning,
President Bush repeated his claim that military action against
Iraq was necessary because Saddam Hussein poses a threat to
the United States, the Middle East region and the people of
his country. I spoke earlier with Edmund Ghareeb, professor
of Kurdish studies at American University and asked him about
the truth behind these claims.

Story: KURDISH SITUATION FEARED TO REMAIN SAME
While talk of launching a war against Iraq often revolves
around Saddam Hussein, what’s often left out is the
potential impact of military action on the people of the region.
One group commonly mentioned is the Kurdish population. Washington
has promised to protect Kurdish-held Northern Iraq from an
attack from Saddam Hussein during any military action to topple
him.

Angeles interviews Kani Xulam, Director of the American Kurdish
Information Network

Story: CHOMSKY RESPONDS TO QUESTIONS ABOUT IRAQ
MIT Professor and noted author Noam Chomsky spoke recently
at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge, MA.
He faced some audience questions on the logic of using force
to secure U.S. interests in the Middle East and when it is
appropriate to use force in the face of a nuclear threat.
Tape: Noam Chomsky, recorded by Martin Voelker of No U-turn
Radio.
