Saudi Arabia oil connection

The FBI has announced it’s investigating whether the Saudi government funded two students who allegedly took part in the Sept. 11th attacks in the U.S. An article in the latest issue of Newsweek titled “The Saudi Money Trail links checks from the Saudi Royal Family’s account to rent payments for the alleged 9-11 hijackers. Code Pink

A peace vigil and hunger strike by the womens' group Code Pink continues into its second week out front of the white house. the demonstrators turned their attention to domestic affairs today...reacting to the signing of the homeland security bill. Among them was Zakiya Habi, an iraqi american who was the first elected female judge in iraq. Before september eleventh, habi's two sons were jailed in the United States on the basis of secret evidence which neither they nor their attorneys were allowed to see. it turned out the US authorities had made a mistake in identifying the name of a town in syria called "kabu", thinking the men were terrorists from the city in afghanistan called Kabul. Habi's sons were released, but only after four years in prison. Habi is concerned the US government is trampling American’s civil rights in the name of protecting the homeland:

Weapons Inspectors in Iraq

As weapon inspectors return to Iraq, there is a sense that many are holding their breath as though waiting for the other shoe to drop. There is an overwhelming sense that UN Resolution 1441 clause that calls for Iraq to list “all” biological and chemical agents for any purpose, is a recipe for failure.

On the ground in Iraq

The skies in Iraq were blue and unusually clear today upon the arrival of the weapons inspectors. Iraqis are celebrating the Holy month of Ramadan under the Muslim faith. There is a feeling of anticipation in the air according to Kathy Kelly, co-coordinator of Voices in the Wilderness who’s living in Bagdad and working with the Iraq peace team. We spoke with Kelly earlier today and she says the average Iraqi is aware of the inspectors’ arrival and put off by reports some in the Bush administration are attempting to discredit Head U-N Weapons Inspector Hans Von Blix. Kathy Kelly and two other members of Voices In the Wilderness have been fined $10,000 dollars by the U.S. Treasury Department for violating the U.S. sanctions imposed against Iraq by entering the country and taking medicine and supplies to help the Iraqi children. Kelly says Voices in the Wilderness believes the U.S. imposed sanctions are a crime against humanity.

Last Saturday The Philadelphia Regional Anti-War Network, a coalition of peace groups in South East Pennsylvania, organized a demonstration against the upcoming conflict in Iraq. . There were over two dozen speakers from such groups as Veterans for Peace, House of Grace Catholic Worker, and Campaign to End the Sanctions. About 3000 protestors marched from Philadelphia's City Hall to the Liberty Bell and back again. Jamie Graham has this report...

Sit-in: Kerry’s office

At the New School University in New York City, a number of students walked out of class in protest of the pro-war position of it’s President, former democratic Senator Bob Kerry. Kerry not only has a taken a pro-war stance but is a member of a ultra conservative group actually advocating for the “freedom” of Iraq. The New School, founded by radical pacificists and war resistors at the end of World War I were obviously outraged and have filed petitions calling for Kerry’s resignation. We sat down with student organizer Colin Walsh.

Bush/moron

The US was in an uproar last week over Canadian Director of Communications Franscoise Ducros's statement that American President George W. Bush is a moron. But according to Toronto-based film director Albert Nerenberg-- a self-proclaimed stupidity expert-- that description might not be so far-fetched after all...
