Story: U.S. Congressman Charlie Rangel: Reinstatement
of the Draft
One U.S. Congressman, Representative Charles Rangel from
New York believes that the prospect of American soldiers in
combat may give his congressional colleagues pause about rushing
to war. So Rangel is introducing a bill calling for the re-instatement
of the military draft in this country. Rangel says only one
lawmaker in the House has an enlisted man in their family.
Rangel and the majority of the Congressional Black Caucus
voted against the resolution giving Bush authority to wage
war against Iraq. During a conversation earlier today with
Rangel we asked him to explain his actions that on the face
of it sounds duplicitous.

Story: Radio Netherlands War of Words
Speaking on the floor of the Senate in 1917, California
Congressman Hiram Johnson made his famous remarks that truth
is the first casualty of war. While overt censorship might
seem like a rare thing in the American democracy, Peacewatch
has been examining the various forms it can take: among the
editors, in the cutting room and on the battlefield.
Today, in the third of a five-part series produced by Radio
Netherlands called"War of Words," we look at those
doing the reporting from the frontlines...
