Story: The 108th Congress was sworn in today
Today, the Senate passed a five-month extension of emergency
federal unemployment benefits two hours after getting sworn
in; with Republicans in control of both houses. The $7 billion
jobless assistance package was the first order of business
for the Senate under its new majority leader, Bill Frist of
Tennessee. The House is to take up the bill Wednesday, a day
before it is to be signed by President Bush to avoid any delay
in checks for about 750,000 jobless workers. Not all on the
hill were delighted with the GOP takeover.

Story: On the ground from Iraq Denis Halliday
The U.S. military command that would run a war against Iraq
is dispatching much of its battle staff to a Persian Gulf
base equipped to coordinate large-scale land, sea and air
war. Officials say the command post at Camp As Sayliyah in
Qatar is being readied in case President Bush decides that
military force is needed to disarm Iraq. Hussein says Baghdad
is ready for war, if it happens and accused the U-N weapons
inspectors of being spies. He says the only way now to avoid
an invasion is for the Bush administration “to seek
a way out of what is regarded as a mess.” Dennis Halliday,
former Head of the U-N Oil for Food Program is presently in
Baghdad.

Story: Food For Oil: Turkey Truckers: Pratap
The United Nations oil-for-food program calls for limited
quantities of Iraqi oil to be exported under strict controls
through the Kirkuk pipeline to tankers in the Mediterranean,
or via the Mina al-Bakr terminal to the Persian Gulf. But
for the last ten years, large quantities of diesel and fuel
oil have been smuggled through northern Iraq, by truck into
eastern Turkey. In the Iraqi border town of Azkho, they’ve
been smuggling up to 150 thousand tons of diesel fuel a month
across the narrow bridge to the Turkish border post of Habur
for the last decade.

Story: North Korea: Gavan McCormack
As the controversy over North Korea continues to build,
there is a cloud of puzzlement of why such a small country
would seem to defy the US. Bush’s declaration that N.
Korea is part of the axis of evil stands in stark contradiction
to the progress taking place in the region today.
Peace Watch spoke with N. Korean expert Professor, Gavan
McCormack of Australia National University today. McCormack
has written extensively on the subjects and debunked the myths
of N. Korea as a rogue nation, and part of the axis of evil.

National University, The Research School of Pacific and Asian
Studies.

Story: Victims of September 11th Families for Peaceful
Tomorrows
As President Bush continues to prepare a military message
for Iraq a group of victims of September 11 are also enroute
to Baghdad. Robert Knight spoke with members of September
11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows as they departed New
York for Baghdad.
