Story: North Korea Pulls out of Non-Proliferation Treaty: Ambassador

For the first time, one of the 187 members of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty has pulled out. Ratified in 1970, the treaty is intended to halt the spread of nuclear weapons, while promoting the development of peaceful uses of nuclear energy. North Korea asserts that it's withdrawal, announced earlier today takes effect immediately; although, it would be willing to reverse its decision if the U.S. and its allies normalize relations.

Story: I.N.S Democracy Now

Today is the deadline for hundreds of men and teenagers of Middle Eastern descent in the U.S. to report to the Immigration and Naturalization Services to register. It’s a new requirement under the new Homeland Security Act in the wake of September 11th. In the past, many have been detained and even deported without due process. In a dramatic series of events, yesterday, an American citizen of Afghan descent Faysil Ovi, was removed from a plane bound for Afghanistan after being deported by the INS.

Federal agents entered his home in the middle of the night without warrants and took him into custody. He was housed in a New Jersey jail for weeks without any explanation of why. His attorney, after a tremendous search, located him and issued an appeal to the media, and Congresswoman Nydia Valazquez, of New York. Yesterday, federal judge Patricia Rowen ordered Olvi’s release and a hearing has been scheduled. Olvi was on a plane headed for Afghanistan. He was on Democracy Now this morning along with Congresswoman Nydia Valazquez.

Story: Immigration: American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee

Karem Shora Legal adviser for the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) spoke with PeaceWatch today regarding the required registration of men and boys over the age of 16 who entered the US before September 30th. The first group included immigrants from Iran, Iraq, Sudan Syria and had a deadline of December 16th. The event was fraught with disarray. The second dead line ends today. The second group mandated to report includes residents from Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Eritrea, Lebanon, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Qatar, Somalia, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. Saudi Arabia is included in a third group required to report. According to Shora there was so much confusion that there are no hard and firm numbers of how many persons are still being held.

Story: CIA/Ryme Katkhouda

Recently, Iraq reiterated its invitation from the CIA to inspect Iraq for weapons of mass destruction. The Boston Globe reported recently that about 100 US special forces and more than 50 CIA officers have been inside Iraq for at least four months, in breach of international law.

Story: War of Words: Radio Netherlands

It seems that plans for war and even plans for peace are assembled behind closed doors. The results are what we’ve seen in the past year bellicose political leaders who at times seem out of step with both their parties and their people. Today on Peace Watch, we take a look behind those closed doors at the military planners in the War Room, and the alternative vision of the “Peace Room.”

Tape: Part 4 of 5 part series from producer Michele Ernsting and Radio Netherlands.
