Story: Voices In the Wilderness Expelled from Palestine Hotel Iraq-Kathy Kelly

Less than 24 hours after issuing a press release highlighting the failures of the U.S. Military's attempts to oversee humanitarian intervention in Iraq, Voices in the Wilderness was banned from meeting with the U.S. Civil Military Operations Center, or international journalists, working out of the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad. Kathy Kelly, co-founder of Voice in the Wilderness spoke with Peacewatch today from Amman, Jordan as she makes her way back home to the U.S. Kelly lived in Iraq, as a witness to the invasion during the entire bombing campaign - - - we asked her how such an experience has changed her life.

Story: Earth Day

Today, April 22nd is Earth Day, and the Pentagon marked the occasion with a display of environmentally friendly military technologies, including a hydrogen fuel cell-powered Humvee vehicle. With the nation's attention still riveted on the war in Iraq, most Americans probably aren't aware that today is Earth Day.

Some environmentalists say the Bush administration has taken advantage of the public's distraction, pushing through an anti-environmental agenda without anyone noticing. "Fear is a good tool," said Adele Kushner, president of Alto-based Action for a Clean Environment. "You get people worried about something else, and then they don't have time to think about who's chopping all their trees down." 21 environmental groups used the occasion to unveil a new web site; saveourenvironment.org to battle Bush administration claims some of its recent policies are good for the environment.

Here on Peacewatch, we decided today to take a look at some of the environmental effects of the war in Iraq, and the damage inflicted on the eco-system by the US military, both in the Middle East and a bit closer to home.

Tape: China Brothsky and Ross Mirkarimi of Environmentalist Against War, along with Carol Dwyer of Grassroots Actions for Peace.

Story: The Media Coverage of the Invasion of Iraq - Coleman McCarthy

In an op-ed piece in the Washington Post this weekend, former syndicated columnist Colman McCarthy took issue with the complaints by Secretary of war Donald Rumsfeld that former military men were critical of the US’ war efforts in Iraq. PeaceWatch spoke with McCarthy last week regarding the media coverage of the war on Iraq, specifically, the role media coverage played in shaping public opinion on the war.

Tape: Colman McCarthy, director of the Center for Teaching Peace, a non-profit in organization in Washington, DC, who also teaches courses on non-violence at George Washington University Law School, American University and University of Maryland, Wilson H.S. and School without Walls in Washington, DC.
