UN Representative to Iraq Appointed

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan held a press conference yesterday to announce the appointment of Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN’s top human rights official, to serve as Special Representative in Iraq for a four-month period. Peacewatch spoke earlier today with our correspondent Aaron Glantz who recently returned from Baghdad, and we asked him a bit about de Mello’s background.

Harvey Wasserman in Reloading to Fight the Bush Matrix

President-select Bush and the neo-conservatives have come under criticism from political analysts for the administration‘s policy of pre-emptive strikes and what has been seen as the erosion of civil liberties under the so-called patriot act. Peace activists and celebrities have been ostracized for expressing opposition to the invasion of Iraq. Today, Harvey Wasserman, of Columbus Free Press offers this unique critique in a commentary entitled Reloading to Fight the Bush Matrix.

Iranian American Activist Simin Royanian On The Oil Factor In Iran

Senior Bush administration officials postponed a meeting at the White House yesterday morning that was scheduled to discuss US strategy towards Iran. The meeting-- rescheduled for tomorrow-- comes in light of recent intelligence information the administration say suggests Iranian al Qaeda operatives played a role in the May 12th suicide attacks in Saudi Arabia. Those attacks killed 11 and injured 200 in Western housing compounds in the capitol, Riyadh.

Peacewatch spoke earlier today with Simin Royanian, a Kurdish Iranian economist and co-founder of Women for Peace and Justice in Iran. We asked her how much oil factors into the equation.

Tape: Simin Royanian is a Kurdish Iranian economist and a co-founder of the group Women for Peace and Justice in Iran.

Peace Activist Former Pacifica Board Chair Jack O’Dell Examines What’s Next for Peace Movement

With the lifting of the sanctions against Iraq, the UN seems to have legitimized the U.S. led invasion of Iraq. Meanwhile peace activists are re-grouping and deciding their next steps.

Jack Odell, an American who works for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and former Chair of Pacifica Radio National Board, recently stopped by Peacewatch's studios. He discussed the media coverage of the war in Iraq, and his vision for the peace movement.

Tape: Jack Odell, former chair of Pacifica Radio National Board and long time peace activist.
