Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and Military Families
Call for Independent Investigation of Bush’s War Justifications
Many Americans continue to question the accuracy of intelligence
info used by the Bush administration to justify the war in
Iraq. And as the body count of soldiers and civilians continues
to rise, US military families are beginning to put pressure
on the government to take action.
Earlier today, more than one hundred families of soldiers
serving in Iraq held a press conference in Chicago with Illinois
Democratic Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky. They were pressing
for an independent commission to investigate whether intelligence
information on Iraq’s alleged weapons of mass destruction
was distorted to justify war. Peacewatch spoke with Congresswoman
Jan Schakowsky earlier this afternoon about the press conference
and about a recent meeting she had with some constituents.

US Authority Fails to Compensate Iraqis for Losses
Despite the end of the brutal Ba’athist regime of
Saddam Hussein, Iraqis say that life under the American occupation
has presented its own, new set of problems and complications.
Iraqis face the threat of being killed, harmed or imprisoned
by American forces, and families are always ready to hide
their precious properties if American soldiers enter their
houses searching for weapons. Iraqis driving their cars have
learned to take extra care to evade moving American military
vehicles, fearing that they may crash their cars. According
to some accounts, this sort of constant fear and caution has
become a part of daily in Iraq.

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At Lincoln
Memorial, August 28, 1963
Today is the 40th anniversary of the March on Washington,
where several hundred thousand people from all walks of life
gathered at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial to demand that
this country put an end to legalized segregation and racial
injustice. The keynote speech was given by a young minister
whose eloquence and passion engaged a nation. The Reverend
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave what is now known as his
“I Have A Dream” speech that we present now.
