Project Censored Releases List of Top 25 Unreported
News Stories of 2003: A Brief History
Every year, a team of student researchers and faculty at
Sonoma State University in California investigates news stories
that are of great importance but receive generally little
attention in the mainstream American media. The group calls
itself “Project Censored,” and it just released
its 2004 yearbook of what it deems the top 25 most relevant
yet unreported stories of the past year. An awards ceremony
was held last weekend, co-hosted by Pacifica’s Dennis
Bernstein and Larry Bensky, and broadcast live on Free
Speech TV. We’re going to bring you some of the sound
from that event on today and tomorrow’s show, but we
want to start with this conversation with Project Censored
co-founder Peter Phillips.
Tape: Peter Phillips is the founder of Project Censored
at Sonoma State University in California. His group of faculty
and student researchers has just released its book of the
top 25 most censored news stories of 2003. That documentary
was produced by Dan Bluthardt and Joshua Travers.

Co-Founder Martin Lee
On today’s program, we’re presenting excerpts
from last weekend’s Project Censored awards ceremony,
honoring the journalists who uncovered the most relevant but
unreported news stories of 2003. We continue now with Dennis
Bernstein—host of Pacifica radio’s “Flashpoints”
program—as he speaks with Martin Lee, a veteran media
democracy activist and co-founder of the watchdog group Fairness
and Accuracy in Reporting.
Tape: Matt Bowles is the author of the 24th most censored
news story of 2003, according to the group Project Censored.
We’ll have more from last weekend’s award ceremony--
including a speech by former Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia
McKinney—on tomorrow’s program.
