Peacewatch Biographies

Verna Avery-Brown (PeaceWatch Host and Producer) - Washington Bureau Chief for Pacifica Radio who also serves as the host of the nationally syndicated program Peacewatch heard daily on all five Pacifica stations and affiliates. Verna Avery-Brown’s history with Pacifica dates back to 1988 when she covered Capital Hill as a Correspondent for the Pacifica Network News. A graduate of American University, Ms. Brown has worked in both public and commercial radio news for nearly three decades.

Her career at Pacifica came to an abrupt halt in October 1999 when she walked off her job as then Anchor of Pacifica Network News out of political protest of the direction the management was steering the network in. Her return to Pacifica was facilitated by the architects of the lawsuit that defeated the prior management team and has led to a restructuring of the network. In 2001, Ms. Brown returned as the Deputy Executive Director of Pacifica.

Verna Avery-Brown is a wife to Robby Brown, the mother of four sons and is proud of the fact that she’s a second generation native Washingtonian.

Scott Gurian (PeaceWatch Producer) - Scott Gurian is the founding producer of Pacifica's Peacewatch, and he has produced several special, national broadcasts, including Pacifica's thirteen hour program on the one year anniversary of September 11th. Prior to working for Pacifica, he was Assistant Producer and New Jersey correspondent for Free Speech Radio News, as well as a roving reporter for Radio for Peace International shortwave radio based in Costa Rica. He has produced and reported for the National Radio Project, Democracy Now!, WNYC's Radio Lab, the WBAI Evening News, WMBR (Cambridge, MA), NPR's All Things Considered and Maine Public Radio, and he interned with filmmaker Michael Moore.

Among the highlights of his reporting, Scott has covered the annual vigil at the School of the Americas in Ft. Benning, Georgia; the Presidential inauguration in January, 2000 and the protests surrounding the formation of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) in Quebec City in April, 2001. He also filed daily reports for Democracy Now! on the February, 2001 march of the Zapatista Indians in Mexico, and he covered a DC-NY peace walk of the group September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows in November of 2001.

Scott studied radio documentary at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine, and he studied video documentary at Emerson College in Boston. He hopes to one day be a foreign correspondent.

Angelique Shofar (PeaceWatch Associate Producer) - Angelique Shofar is Associate Producer of PeaceWatch. Her multi-media career began in 1995 as a free-lance writer for a number of local African American publications including The Capitol Spotlight and News Dimension. Angelique has written for The New York Amsterdam News as well as African Profiles International.

Angelique began her radio career at WPFW in 1996 doing local and international news broadcasting and voice-over. Ah and West African singer and performer, Miatta Fahnbulleh.

Angelique’s unique style of expression extends to reveal her many dimensions and embraces the spirituality that governs her life. Her career extends as a holistic health practitioner. She is a certified Yoga and Massage Therapist specializing in women’s health and holistic parenting. At the heart, she is a dancer and a proud mother to 5-year-old Julian Djimon and considers her role as mother first and foremost. Angelique is a native of Liberia, West Africa.
